Italy wins Eurovision 2021; Israel places 17th - The Times of Israel

Italy won the 2021 Eurovision competition for the first time in 30 years on Saturday, with its alternative rock band Maneskin sweeping the popular vote.

Israel’s Eden Alene reached 17th place out of 26 participating countries.

Israel, represented by Alene, didn’t receive douze, or 12 points, the highest possible set of points from any of the participating countries. She did, however, pick up 73 jury points, followed by only 20 points from the public, for a total of 93 points.

Eurovision voting was changed in 2016. While the voting is still done by a jury, public votes now make up 50% of the vote. Viewers cast their votes by telephone, SMS or using the official app, but are banned from voting for their own country’s act. Each national spokesperson from the participating countries then awarded two sets of points to their ten favorite songs.

“Ready to VOTE?” Alene posted on Instagram after her performance on Saturday night.

Alene took the stage third with her song “Set Me Free.”

Surrounded by her five male dancers onstage Saturday night, Alene screamed her thank yous in Hebrew, Arabic and English.

“Toda raba, shukran, thank you very much,” she yelled, before exiting the stage.

Earlier in the day, Alene posted a video of herself getting made up, already dressed in her outfit by Israeli designer Alon Livne, who has also designed for Beyonce and Lady Gaga.

Alene won a spot for the finals during the first semifinal on Tuesday night. Her signature “whistle note” may have been a factor in winning fans over, it apparently being the highest note ever struck at Eurovision in its history.

According to Wiwibloggs, the website devoted to all things Eurovision, the highest note ever sung at the song context until this year was a Bb6, sung by Maja Blagdan and “Sveta ljubav” (Croatia 1996).

Eden’s B6 note is one half-note higher, which would make her the new record holder, reported Wiwibloggs.

Alene was set to represent Israel in 2020, but the contest was canceled altogether last year due to the pandemic. The Netherlands hosted the 2021 contest after winning in 2019 in Tel Aviv.

In 2018, singer Netta Barzilai became Israel’s fourth Eurovision winner after taking the crown in Lisbon, Portugal, with her song “Toy.”
