Netflix's Cowboy Bebop Unveils First Clip of Ed, Addresses Fan Speculation - CBR

Netflix finally revealed the first footage of Radical Ed in its live-action Cowboy Bebop series, putting to rest months of speculation that the character was absent from the show.

The brief clip, posted to the Netflix Geeked Twitter page, shows newcomer Eden Perkins as Radical Ed. They waltz around a dimly lit alley, swaying in the shadows and splaying their arms wide before quickly waving at the camera and disappearing into the night. It's a cryptic tease, one that barely reveals the character's design. The live-action Ed appears to be kitted with their trademark white shirt and green backpack but more minute details can't be made out.

"To everyone who’s been asking “Where’s Ed?” — you don’t have to wait any longer. Introducing newcomer Eden Perkins (they/them), who plays the role of Radical Ed in Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop, now streaming," reads the tweet which accompanied the clip. While fans of the anime will undoubtedly be pleased to know that Ed is indeed in the live-action series, they shouldn't expect the character to take up plenty of screentime.

Speaking to IGN, showrunner André Nemec explained that Ed will not feature as prominently as the core cast of Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir) and Faye Valentine (Danielle Pineda). "We really take our time to get to know our characters. And Ed is a very complicated character in all of the good and right ways. And I wanted to make sure that, fingers crossed, we get to a season 2 that we really have the appropriate amount of time to explore the character of Ed," said Nemec.

Netflix's reveal of Ed puts to rest months of fan speculation that the character would be completely absent in the live-action adaption of Cowboy Bebop. Most of Netflix's promotional material focuses on Spike, Jet and Faye, never so much as mentioning Ed. Even the beloved corgi Ein is highlighted more than the notorious child hacker.

Netflix's Cowboy Bebop largely received mixed reviews from critics. CBR's Sam Stone writes, "Cowboy Bebop's cast delivers an emotional depth that matches -- and sometimes surpasses -- the anime series. However, the live-action show itself could've used a bit more polish to make it something special."
